THE COMPASSION OF JESUS

April 1, 2015

I will be attending a funeral today of a young man of 20.  It's so unnatural to see someone so young lying in a casket.  I thought of Jesus on the road to Nain.  He and his disciples happened on the funeral procession of just such a young man.  Jesus took pity immediately on the mother whom he knew would face a stark future with no man in her life to keep and protect her.  It was risky to reach out to the boy and I imagine the Apostles knew it and perhaps even said, "are you sure you want to do this?".  Christ's healing powers were becoming famous and it was harder and harder to go anywhere without drawing hungry crowds who wanted a piece of him very much like the celebrity frenzy we see in this century.  But Jesus' compassion wins out and he touches the boy and the world turned upside down for the boy, his mother, and everyone else who witnessed it.  In this moment Jesus shows us that feeling compassion is a one-legged creature without action.  Remember that Jesus could not just float away from the scene but had to face the consequences of his actions .He trusted the Father to see him through and so must we.
